About Duke – Duke Seifried is a true living legend of hobby gaming! At age 70+ he remains active as ever as an artist, designer, sculptor, painter, dioramist, model builder, product developer, game designer, writer, public speaker, musician, music arranger, entrepreneur and gamemaster.

He is a member of the Legion of Honor and has received the prestigious Scruby Award from HMGS, and the coveted Hall of Fame “Callie” from Origins (Adventure Gaming Arts and Design); these and numerous other awards attest to the fact that Uncle Duke – as he is affectionately known to every wargamer – is one of the major pioneers and contributors to the success and growth of our hobby.

He was the driving force in several firms in the early pioneering days:

Der Kriegspielers, Custom Cast and Heritage USA. Where he was the first miniatures manufacturer to create licensed gaming figures from The Lord of the Rings, John Carter of Mars and Star Trek!

He then joined friends at TSR as EVP and was responsible for getting the blue and red box D&D into mass-market book stores like Waldenbooks and B-Daltons.

His “EXTRAVAGANZAS” have often been the headliner at Origins, HISTORICON and GenCon, as well as at countless other shows. His mixing of fantasy and historical into Adventure Gaming (his phrase) created an entirely new class of game, and his massive, stunning dioramas and detailed figurines set the standard for convention presentation. Playing in an Uncle Duke game is considered the highlight of a convention for many attendees.

Game: El Cid – EL CID is depicted at the Battle of Cuarte fought in 1094 before the walls of Valencia (which feature an impressive modeling job).　 Cid has decided to meet the attacking Almoravid Berbers of Ben Yusef (surrounded by his infamous “Black Guard” and the　Hasham “Black” (heavy) Cavalry before the city rather than defending from within because his army is primarily mounted. The beginnings of “Knights” are depicted in the Caballeros Hidalgo with help from cheaper militia types armed as the Hidalgos but without any armor and not mounted on massive warhorses.　 They are called Caballeros Villanos.　 Support in the form of javelin slinging light cavalry is found in the richer Spanish fighting in their　accustomed style as the Caballeros Nobles. The traditional Spanish light cavalry known as Jinetes and some Andalusian Allies mounted bowmen on their well-trained horses complete Cid’s mounted units.　 A small number of Infantry in the form, of Aqueros (archers), militia crossbowmen, skirmishing slingers and javelineers are backed up by a sizeable unit of Peones spearmen with archers in the rear ranks being led by a Bishop. El Cid’s personal retinue of well-trained, armored crossbowmen complete the army; other　than a few militia formations left behind to defend the walls.

The Almoravid Berbers are high-quality spearmen and archers supported by small numbers of light cavalry and camel bowmen.　 Mercenary units of high-quality Ghuzz horse archers, well-mounted, and some Sudanese　spearmen serve as well.　 Ben Yusef’s Guards are of maximum quality and are really difficult to deal with! The somber colors of these fanatics (the Al Queada of that day) contrast greatly with the bright hues of the Spanish.　 We have played six games with them at this time with three wins each…so it is a very well-balanced game with the outcome dependent upon you.

Come join us for a game with beautiful scenics and well-painted soldiers set upon the plains of Spain.　 I shall give you an exciting game!

Uncle Duke

Using Warhammer Ancient Battles rules. Will run on Friday evening at the KC gamefair.

Game: The Black Gates!

A coalition of Gondor and Rohan made up of the survivors of the Pelennor Fields battle assaults the Gates of the Morannon to deflect Sauron’s attention away from the Ringbearer on his critical mission of destroying The One Ring by casting it into the fires within Mount Doom. March 25 TA 3019 Battle of the Morannon.

A set up to be seen to be believed! Only run twice before! once at Historicon and once at Gen-Con!

The Black Gates will be A lavish diorama constructed by Duke. A 14 x 12 1/2′ diorama including a massive Mount Doom, the Tower of Barad Dur and the defences of the Morannan built into the rocky mountains of shadow. The game will be played with a cast of 1200 25mm figurines drawn fron Heritage’s Fantastiques of the early　 70′s combined with the LOTR line Duke designed for the Ralph Baskshi movie some years later.

The essential info about the KC Game Fair and its goals.

The essential info and basic FAQ about the KC Game Fair and its goals.
<break>

What is the KC Game Fair?
<break>
The KC Game Fair is a new gaming convention bringing a number of long standing KC area gaming conventions under one roof and expanding the offerings to include games of most any type (excluding gambling). We will also be reaching out to KC metro and regional game stores and gaming clubs to raise awareness of these establishments and groups during the convention.
<break>
Which conventions and groups are attending?
<break>
The 2010 list includes Blockhead!, BorderWars (HAHMGS – Heart of America Historical Miniatures Gaming Society) and ShaunCon (The Roleplayers Guild of Kansas City, Ltd.). Keep an eye on the site news section for updates.
<break>
What types of games are included?
<break>
Board games, historical and other miniatures wargaming and roleplaying games are for certain. Collectable card games, live action roleplaying and other games are possibilities. Some will be single game events, while others may be tournaments or competitive play. The list should expand as plans solidify.
<break>
What other events are included?
<break>
We will have gaming industry guests and hope to include events such as industry panels, a meet and greet, game demonstrations, benefit events and special gaming events.
<break>
Do I need to know how to play to attend?
<break>
No. In most cases you may learn the game when you sit down at the table. There may be some competitive play events that require more rules knowledge. Game demonstrations will also be available for some games, particularly board games.
<break>
Dealers?
<break>
Yes, although the details are still being worked out, including cost and the number and size of dealer spots available at the event.
<break>
How does my group, store or I get involved?
<break>
Essentially, email kcgamefair [at symbol] Yahoo.com with your contact information and what you might want to bring to the Fair. See below for additional info:
<break>
Groups – We will have a table for flyers and other promotional information for area gaming clubs and conventions. We also hope to provide tables for clubs to use to promote their own club directly, possibly free of charge. We are still determining space allocation, so this may or may not happen (and may depend on interest). While a club may sell their own limited promotional items from the table, they may not sell other items without purchasing a regular dealers table. Additionally, we hope that gaming groups will attend and run events as part of the regular convention event schedule, as well as play.
<break>
Conventions – Other area conventions may be included at the game fair.
<break>
Stores – We will have a wall or table to put out advertisements and other promotional items for KC area and other game stores. Stores may contact us directly to discuss attending as a dealer. We are also open to suggestions as to ways to promote area stores during the event.
<break>
Individuals – Individuals may participate as players and event organizers, and need not be part of a larger group to do so.
<break>
Volunteers and event organizers - Individual volunteers may be needed. Event organizers should contact us as soon as possible so details may be worked out. We are looking for events ranging from a single board game or RPG round, to miniatures tournaments or sanctioned trading card events. There will be formal registration process available later on for individual games. If you want to run a tournament, live action or large-scale event, please contact us directly.
<break>
Dates and Location
<break>
Click here for details.
<break>
Who are the convention staff and organizers?
<break>
The KCGF is privately held, with an advisory staff made up of participating members/organizers from Blockhead!, BorderWars, ShaunCon, and other interested individuals.
<break>

“Euro-Games” or designer board games are games that normally have easy to understand (language independent) rules, lots of interactivity between the players, attractive parts or components, and play times less than 90 minutes with high replay value. Most of these games rely on skill rather than luck, and tend to use more politics and economics instead of direct player versus conflict.

Players benefit from these games through increased socialization because you have direct player to player contact instead of against a computer. It is not un-common for players to form board game clubs in which gamers get together on a weekly basis to challenge each other and play new games, meet new people and make new friends. Because of high levels of interactivity players social skills may increase over time, boosting self-confidence through obtaining goals and playing games with other people. Most Euro-style games do not eliminate players until the end of the game and are very balanced so that players may or may not know who the winner actually is until they tally the points. Family’s can benefit as well from a board game nights bringing everyone closer together once a week strengthening bonds between members and making new memories for everyone to share.

Strategy is an important part of board game play often decisions that players make early in the game can affect their overall position later. Game mechanics require players to think and plan their next steps and adjust their tactics during game play in response to other player’s actions which keeps everyone involved in between turns. Players can learn to form alliances to accomplish goals for points, calculate risks, and use math skills during the game to track their advantages.

Board gaming is very beneficial to players of all ages and helps develop real life skills that players can use in their day to day lives while having lots of fun.

If you have ever played one of those games and thought “this was great when I was learning to spell, roll dice and take over the world (respectively) but is that all that board games have to offer?”

The answer is a resounding “Heck No!”

In Europe, particularly Germany, board games continue to be a family hobby well into adulthood. Games can range from twenty minutes to multiple days. From the complexity of Tic-Tac-Toe to running a railroad empire in the 1800′s.

There’s even a web site dedicated to tracking, reviewing and sharing all things board game at www.boardgamegeek.com.

The KC Game Fair is a great place to meet people familiar with the rules and ready to teach and play gamers of all ages, levels of interest and desire for strategy.
